Maintaining Your New Mod:
A mod is a mechanical device that requires some love and care if you’re going to chief on it daily. There are several things you should be aware of, and you should know how to keep your vape parts functioning if you want the best flavor and strongest clouds your mod can offer.
- Batteries - You want to make sure your batteries are always charged. These are NOT like cell phone batteries. They don’t want you to drain them dry every once in awhile. Making sure your batteries are regularly charged will prevent power leaks. These power drains will cause your battery to die a bit at a time until it no longer holds a charge or really triggers the coils. Rest the batteries for a bit after charging them to allow the residual energy to disperse. Batteries can hold some of that energy in the capacitors and it’s good practice to let them sit before you turn your mod back on. This will help prevent battery flares and mod explosions.
- Cleaning - You need to make sure you clean your mod regularly. Dripping, over-filling, and carelessness will cause build-up and prevent your mod from firing fully. You should check a few different spots when you’re cleaning your mod:
- Switch - The switch is the main point of your circuit. It’s where the power is regulated and if it gets oxidized or has build-up, it won’t fire correctly. To clean the switch you should take it apart carefully and soak all the pieces in ISO alcohol for a bit. Gently clean with a toothbrush or Q-tip to remove all of the gunk. Having a conductive lubricant to use when reassembling the switch can help to maintain your switch a little longer.
- Contact Points - There are a few contact points that need to be cleaned. The more batteries your mod has, the more points you need to check to remove gunk and oxidation. Battery tubes need to be soaked and then cleaned with a Q-tip. Check for burrs or rough spots that can damage the battery wrapping. Check your threading and use a fine metal brush to remove any drippage or build-up here.
- There are new mods with anodizing on them. While these are neat looking, the anodizing can attract more build-up. If you’re using an anodized mod, you will want to make sure you’re cleaning your mod more often.
- If your mod is under warranty then DO NOT mess with the center screw. These are usually soldered in place and will void your warranty if you adjust them even slightly. Just clean them with a Q-tip and make sure there is no spillage on the inner coil.
- Remember It’s Electronic - You have to treat your mod with a little respect. Mods are made of electronics – even if they are minimalistic. You can’t vape on them at max power for hours on end without eventually frying the circuitry. You can’t be sloppy with them and expect them to last you a long time. Clean any drips, and be as careful as possible when refilling your tank. Overfilling your mod can lead to drippage that will block your contact points and prevent the batteries from firing fully. Just like your cell phone is protected in a case, protecting your mod will ensure you’re vaping for a long time.
Taking Care of Your E-juice:
Your mod is only one piece of the puzzle! Even if you’re religious about taking care of your mod, you can be unhappy with your vaping experience if you don’t take care of the ejuices you put inside. Now it’s time to take a look at your e-juice and talk about how to properly take care of your e-liquids.
- Light & Sun - Sunlight and UV rays are a vaper’s worst enemies for eliquids. You need to store your e liquids in a cool, dark place to prevent them from degrading. E-juices will begin to darken, and that process continues the longer you leave them out in unfavorable conditions. Vape juice flavors will degrade as well. Some of the best eliquids are made with terpenes for flavor and smell, and terpenes are known to break down and oxidize from ultra-violet light. Heat will also continue to break down your e-juice and cause even the best e juice flavors to degrade. During the summer you may see oxidation and discoloration. If you can store your vape juice in a fridge, that will help to slow down all of the chemical reactions that are happening.
- Bottles - If you're storing your ejuice for a bit of time, you want to make sure to store them in dark bottles. Clear bottles do nothing to block out UV. Use dark blue or brown bottle to prevent the darkening of your ejuices. (Read more about what is in e juice here.)
With just a little effort, your e-cig mod will last for years. Nicotine in e-juice will last from 1-2 years if it is quality-made and you store it properly. Following standard practices will ensure you can vape on your ejuice for months.
You have to be a bit more diligent with the mod itself, but just a few best practice tips and tricks will keep you happy until you’re ready to upgrade to a bigger and better model. Learning to build your own e-cig mods will help you learn the best ways to take care of your mod.
